Introduction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Refiner\u2019s in-app surveys offer flexible targeting options to help you reach the right users at the right time. This page explains how Target Audiences work for both web and mobile surveys, and outlines all available targeting options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In simple terms, the Target Audience defines who should see a survey, while the Launch Trigger determines when it should appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Users become part of a Target Audience when they meet a set of criteria that you define (see below). This allows you to precisely control which segments of your user base are eligible to receive a survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being part of a Target Audience does not automatically trigger a survey for a user. It only means that a user is potentially qualified to see them. At what moment a survey is triggered is determined by Trigger Events<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Audience Type<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Web App Surveys can be used to survey logged-in users of a web application, or anonymous website visitors. Which of the two modes you use depends on where you want to launch your surveys and you can find a detailed comparison of the two operation modes here<\/a>. This option is only available for Web App Surveys. <\/p>\n\n\n

User Segment Targeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Refiner provides a powerful segmentation engine<\/a>, which lets you create groups of users based on their traits and behaviour. These user segments can then be used to create a Target Audience for your in-product survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a first step you need to create user segments that represent your Target Audience. You can create Data Driven Segments<\/a>, as well as Manual Segments<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you’ve created user segments that describes your Target Audience, you can find them in the Targeting section of your survey.<\/p>\n\n\n

You can use a combination of different segment for your Target Audience. Select one or multiple segments to include in your Target Audience and choose whether all of them or at least one of them needs to match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working with multiple user segments has the advantage that you can easily target a smaller group of users. For example “Signed up 30 days ago” AND “Power Users”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, you can also exclude users from your Target Audience as shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n

Segment based targeting is not available if you operate our JavaScript SDK in Anonymous Mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Country Targeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Refiner allows you to launch surveys based on the country of a user. When activated, the country of a user is automatically detected using their IP address. <\/p>\n\n\n

Refiner uses a third-party IP Geocoding service to determine the country. All IP addresses are anonymized by setting the last digits to zero, are not linked to user profiles and not stored in our system. If country targeting is deactivated, no IP address lookup or tracking is performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The JavaScript SDK allows you to manually set the country code<\/a> of your users. If you provide a country code, no IP address lookup is performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Web Device Type Targeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Web App Surveys, you can choose to launch surveys on Desktop, Tablets or Mobile devices. <\/p>\n\n\n

Mobile Platform Targeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When using our Mobile App Surveys, you have the option to target users on Android, iOS, or both platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n

Language Targeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Refiner allows you to launch surveys based on the language settings of a user. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Web App Surveys, the language settings of the web browser is used to determine if a user understands a language or not. The settings of a web browser can include multiple “preferred languages” and Refiner will consider each language when checking the targeting settings of your survey. You can overwrite the automatic language detection with the “setLocale<\/a>” command of the JavaScript SDK. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mobile App surveys, you can set the language of a user during initialization of the Mobile SDK<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past Interactions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can exclude users from the target audience of a survey based on their interactions with other surveys. You can choose to exclude users that saw or responded to certain surveys in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This option is useful if you\u2019re running the same type of campaign across multiple channels (e.g. web and mobile app) and want to make sure users only respond once.<\/p>\n\n\n

A common example is a multi-channel setup where one survey is shown in a mobile app and another in a web app. By excluding users who already submitted the other survey, you can make sure they don\u2019t see the same campaign twice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
