From there, you can select an existing Tag or create a new one.

Manual Tagging is useful when a response requires human judgment or when you want to add additional context yourself.

For example, you might manually tag:

An important customer request

Feedback that should be reviewed by your product team

A particularly interesting response

Feedback that wasn’t categorized as expected

Changes are applied immediately.

Add Tags automatically with AI

Refiner AI can automatically categorize incoming survey responses based on criteria you define.

This is useful when you already know which topics you want to track, such as feature requests, usability problems, positive feedback, or responses with a particular score.

Set up Auto Tagging

Go to Tags in your Refiner dashboard and create a new Tag.

In the Description field, describe when the Tag should be applied. Refiner AI uses this description as an instruction when analyzing survey responses.

Finally, enable Add Tag Automatically with AI.

Once enabled, Refiner AI reviews incoming survey responses and applies the Tag whenever a response matches the description you provided.

Write a good Tag description

Tag descriptions can be short and written in plain language. Describe as clearly as possible what should be true about a response for the Tag to be added.

For example:

The response text has a positive tone.

The response text mentions UX or usability issues.

The response contains a feature request.

The respondent reports a problem with customer support.

The response has an NPS score of 9 or 10.

You can also combine multiple criteria in a description.

We recommend experimenting with different wording and adjusting the description if a Tag is being applied too broadly or too narrowly.

Check recent responses

When saving an Auto Tag, you can choose to also check your most recent survey responses against it.

This allows you to see how the Tag performs without having to wait for new responses to arrive.

Identify AI Tags

Tags that were added automatically by Refiner AI are visually distinguished from manually added Tags with a different color and a robot icon.

Add Tags programmatically

You can also attach Tags to responses programmatically.

This is useful when your application or survey setup already knows how a response should be categorized.

Depending on the type of surveys, different ways exist to add tags.

Web App Surveys – For surveys running through the Refiner JavaScript SDK, use the tagResponse method to define Tags that should be attached to upcoming survey responses.

Email Surveys – For Email Surveys, you can customize the survey Embed Code to attach Tags to responses automatically.

Survey Pages – Tags can also be passed to Survey Pages using URL parameters.
