7 Best Product Survey Tools Reviewed

Written by Moritz Dausinger, CEO of Refiner

Are you planning to conduct product surveys? Wondering what software to use?

You know, as cliche as it sounds, it’s darn true – You really have no better way to take the product to the next level than by getting your users involved.

Unfortunately, doing so is also a major pain in the backside, particularly if you want to sit down and interview your users one by one.

It’d just take too long. And then, making sense of all that feedback would take even longer…

That’s why you turn to product surveys. They can deliver equally powerful insights as interviews but faster. Much, much faster.

The only thing is…, and this is a big one, actually… product surveys require dedicated software.

Sure, you could duct-tape something with standard survey software. But sooner or later, you’re going to run into the limitations of such an approach.

The other problem is that almost every survey tool claims it can do product surveys. But for many, this is nothing but an empty claim. These tools still lack the absolutely basic features for product surveys, like the ability to trigger your surveys in-app, for example.

But, of course, there are dedicated product survey tools, too. And below, I compiled a list of seven of the absolutely best of them.

Before we get to the good stuff, though, let’s elaborate on the issue with product survey tools.

Why not every survey tool is suitable for product surveys?

To answer this super quickly – Product surveys focus largely on collecting feedback in-app.

This means that to collect solid product feedback from customers, you must be able to trigger the survey widget directly within your product’s UI.

Here’s one example of an in-app product survey.

Example of an in-app survey.

So, following that logic, a product survey tool must:

  • Offer in-app survey capabilities. This means that the product must not only allow you to create generic or specialized surveys (like NPS, for example) but also, have the ability to embed them within your product.
  • Offer targeting features that would help to ensure that your survey does not disturb users and detract them from your product. For example, the platform must allow you to trigger the survey by event or a specific user actions, time the survey, and place it where users are likely to notice it but without being too intrusive.
  • Have the ability to create short microsurveys. This is a big feature, actually. No user is going to answer a lengthy survey within the app. But they might answer your questions if all it takes to do so is to select from predefined answers or use a rating scale.
  • Have the ability to target specific user segments. This is because, with product surveys, you often have to reach a specific group of people only. For example, there is no point in surveying newly signed-up users about challenges with particular features. They, most likely, haven’t had a chance to use it, let alone experience any challenges. For that, you need to trigger the survey to long-time users only, and that’s where advanced user segmentation comes into play.

These are important factors to keep in mind when you look for product survey software.

You see, many generic survey tools focus on, well, creating generic surveys for any purpose. This also means that they limit the distribution channels to email, shareable link or website widgets.

Now, this is perfectly fine if you’re running a generic survey. But as I’ve mentioned a couple of times already, product surveys are far from generic.

They collect highly specialized surveys – Customer satisfaction, lead qualification surveys, marketing surveys, feature requests, bug notifications, etc.

They target specific users, too.

When you distribute surveys through email, you segment recipients in the email platform. The survey software doesn’t have to do anything with that. It’s up to you to email the survey link to the right audience.

However, with product surveys, the tool triggers the survey directly, so it needs to be capable of creating and targeting specific user segments.

Survey targeting options in Refiner.

(User segmentation features in Refiner, a dedicated product survey tool.)

All the product survey tools I listed below pass these and many other criteria. But I’ve mentioned those in case you’d like to explore other tools and see whether they’d be suitable for running product surveys.

So, with all that in mind, let’s look at the best tools for running product surveys.

7 Best Product Survey Tools

#1. Refiner

Refiner, a dedicated product survey tool.

Refiner (full disclosure – this is my product) is a dedicated product and in-app survey tool. I actually built it specifically for this purpose, to help SaaS and digital product companies like yours to run product surveys within the app, and collect incredibly useful feedback from customers as they are using and engaging with the product

For that reason, Refiner offers everything you’d need to run a successful product survey:

  • It’s in-app first. You can distribute surveys through other channels, too, of course (email, shareable link, etc.) But Refiner is first and foremost an in-app survey tool.
  • Refiner is built for web and mobile applications. With my tool, you can launch surveys in web-based applications with a JS client, or use our Mobile SDK for iOS, Android, or React-Native.
  • You can customize every aspect of your survey – from questions to the look and feel of the survey widget.
  • Refiner offers incredibly powerful tools and features for creating and targeting specific user segments. You can go really deep into segmenting your audience, targeting actions, events, pages, features, and more.
  • Refiner gives you full control over when and where the survey appears in the app. We’ve also been researching the best ways to maximize positioning and triggers
  • Refiner comes equipped with product survey templates, so you don’t have to build new surveys from scratch. With these templates, you can start collecting in-app feedback almost instantly.
  • Not to mention that Refiner will also analyze and provide you with the results so you don’t have to crunch the data by hand.

Here’s a bit more information about Refiner.

Best for: SaaS and digital products companies.

  • Full in-app support
  • Mobile and web-compatible
  • Advanced audience segmentation

  • Ability to import additional user data from other tools – Segment, Rudderstack, etc.

#2. Survicate

Survicate for product surveys.

Survicate started as a traditional survey tool and still offers many features you normally see in such tools. But over time, the platform also grew to incorporate in-app survey capabilities and as a result, has become a solid option for running product surveys.

And so, now, you can run dedicated in-app surveys with Survicate. You can run NPS, CSAT, or product improvement surveys, customize the widget, and use triggers to ensure that your surveys launch at the right time.

Best for: Survicate does not have any specific focus and targets B2B companies in general.

Supported product survey types:

  • NPS
  • CSAT
  • Product feedback
  • Continuous user feedback

In-app capabilities:

  • Triggers
  • Targeting
  • User properties
  • Mobile and web compatible

Ready-made templates: Yes

Analytics capabilities:

  • Reporting dashboards
  • Response filtering
  • Respondent-level analytics

#3. Usersnap

Usersnap.

Usersnap is not a dedicated product survey tool per se. However, the ability to collect user feedback is deeply embedded in its core functionality, hence the inclusion on this list.

In general, Usersnap is all about three things:

  • helping you to collect user feedback,
  • uncover bugs with your product, and
  • test and validate new features.

For the purpose of this list of product survey tools, we’re interested in the first one. And Usersnap offers some powerful features to help you run product surveys.

It allows you to embed the survey within the app, pretty much a staple of such a tool. It offers advanced targeting features, the ability to share screenshots (in case of bug reporting surveys), organize your workflows and the data to run survey projects better, and more.

Best for: Product companies.

Supported product survey types:

  • NPS
  • CSAT
  • Customer effort score
  • Feature request
  • Bug report

In-app capabilities:

  • Customizable widgets
  • Triggers
  • Targeting options

Ready-made templates: Yes

Analytics capabilities:

  • Reporting dashboard
  • AI-assisted feedback categorizing and labeling
  • Data export

#4. Sprig

Sprig.

I generally prefer not to include all-in-one platforms on such a list. However, with this list, I had to compromise and that’s for two reasons. One is that there aren’t that many dedicated product survey tools. However, there are several larger platforms with such functionality. And the other reason is that Sprig is basically a really good tool, and it’d be a shame not to include it here.

Overall, Sprig is a product experience platform with capabilities that range from surveys to user sessions, heatmaps, and more.

But as said, the tool includes the ability to conduct in-app surveys as well. With Sprig, you can run all the usual product surveys. You can also enlist the help of AI to create those surveys. Sprig also offers powerful triggers and targeting options, and its AI can quickly summarize the feedback including open-ended questions.

Best for: Product companies

Supported product survey types:

  • Feature satisfaction
  • Feature request and validation
  • User research, and more.

In-app capabilities:

  • Web and mobile-compatible
  • Triggers

Ready-made templates: Yes

Analytics capabilities:

  • AI Analysis
  • Feedback dashboards

#5. Hotjar

Hotjar.

I suppose everyone in the software/startup space knows Hotjar. I can’t remember whether they were the first such product on the market, but they certainly were in the leading pack.

Anyway, Hotjar is known for its ability to record user sessions, heatmaps, or funnels. However, the platform also offers a way to create on-site surveys. This means that the app would, most likely, be better for web-based products than mobile. But if you’re in that category, it does offer a range of features to help you collect product feedback.

Best for: Web-based products

Supported product survey types:

  • Usability surveys
  • User satisfaction
  • User testing
  • Design feedback, and more.

In-app capabilities:

  • Web widgets only
  • Popover or button triggering
  • AI-based survey creation

Ready-made templates: Yes

Analytics capabilities:

  • Reporting dashboards

#6. Delighted

Delighted.

Delighted is another platform that started as a product survey tool and, over time, expanded to focus on two separate use cases: collecting user feedback and monitoring customer experience.

However, since both use cases require running surveys, Delighted remains a good choice for collecting product feedback.

And the platform offers everything you’d need to run a product survey. It allows you to embed surveys within your product, use mobile SDK, customize the widget, and so on. Plus, Delighted AI can help you create surveys faster, uncover trends within the feedback, and more.

Best for: All types of businesses. Delighted doesn’t target any specific market or audience.

Supported product survey types:

  • Customer experience
  • NPS
  • eNPS
  • CSAT
  • CES
  • Star ratings
  • Product market fit
  • Churn survey

In-app capabilities:

  • Web
  • Mobile SDK

Ready-made templates: Yes

Analytics capabilities:

  • Reporting dashboards
  • AI-driven survey text analysis and segmentation
  • Presentation-ready reports

#7. Chameleon

Chameleon.

The last tool on my list, Chameleon, is another all-in-one platform with product survey capability.

Overall, Chameleon focuses on helping companies boost their in-app UX through product tours, modals, banners, tooltips, resource centers, and, yes, microsurveys.

And it’s that last feature – microsurveys – that you use to conduct product surveys and collect in-app feedback.

With Chameleon, you can trigger simple surveys within the app, use targeting options to ensure that only the right customers see your surveys, manage the feedback, and more.

Best for: Product companies.

Supported product survey types:

  • Customer experience
  • NPS
  • CSAT
  • CES

In-app capabilities:

  • Web
  • Mobile SDK

Ready-made templates: Yes

Analytics capabilities:

  • Reporting dashboards

And that’s it…

These are the best product survey tools I recommend you test and try out for your brand.

Good luck!
