Segment Integration
Introduction
Segment is a popular customer data platform that lets you move user data between literally hundreds of marketing and analytics solutions.
Our Segment integration makes it easy to set up a two-way data synchronisation between Segment and your Refiner account. Once set-up, user traits and events are automatically imported from Segment to Refiner, and survey response data is automatically pushed to your Segment account.
Prerequisites
Before setting up this integration, please make sure that our Web-Client or Mobile SDK is installed correctly and that you are identifying your users with a unique user ID.
Please note: Activating Refiner as a Source or Destination in Segment won’t automatically launch our surveys. You need to install our Web-Client or Mobile SDK separately.
When identifying your users, make sure that both solutions – Refiner as well as Segment – are using the same User IDs. All events received from Segment need to contain a User ID.
If your user IDs don’t match up, neither Refiner nor Segment will be able to match and merge you user data with survey response data.
Sync survey response data to Segment
The main use-case for our Segment integration is to push survey responses from Refiner to your Segment account in real-time.
Once pushed to Segment, you can leverage your survey responses in many different ways. To give you inspiration, here are some of them:
- Attach NPS scores to customer profiles in Segment
- Enrich CRM records with survey responses collected with Refiner
- Add survey responses automatically to a Google Spreadsheet
- …
All data sent from Refiner to Segment contains the user ID you used when identifying your users. If the Refiner user ID matches a user ID in your Segment account, survey responses will get attached to the matching profile. A new user profile will be created in Segment if no user with that ID can be found.
Next to survey response data, you can also choose to track survey interactions like “Saw Survey” or “Dismissed Survey”.
What we send to Segment
You can choose for which surveys we should activate the data synchronization. By default, all survey responses are synced to your Segment account.
You can also choose which events you want to track (Survey Completed, Survey Seen, Survey Dismissed) and under which name they should appear in your Segment account.
All events contain the UUID and name of the survey. The “Survey Completed” event also contains the survey response data provided by the user.
Finally, you can decide to send an “identify” call to Segment when the “Survey Completed” event occurs. Sending a “identify” will add the latest survey response data to the user record in Segment as traits.
How to set up this integration
To set up this integration, follow these steps:
- Log in to your Segment dashboard and click on “Add Source”.
- Then, search for “Refiner” in the integration catalog and select it.
- Segment will provide you a “Write Key” which you need to copy & paste to your Refiner account.
- In your Refiner dashboard, go to “Integrations > Segment”, paste your Segment Write Key
- Choose for which surveys the integration should trigger (optional)
- Choose the trigger events and customer their name
- Choose if you want to send a “identify” call (more info above)
- Choose if you want to prefix user trait names (optional)
That’s it! From this moment on, survey events and response data will automatically flow to your Segment account.
Import user data from Segment to Refiner
Besides pushing survey data to your Segment account, you can also send user data from Segment to Refiner. This data can then be used to create user segments in Refiner for precise targeting.
To set up this integration, choose Refiner as a “Destination” in your Segment account.
Segment will then prompt you for your Refiner API key. You can find this API key in you Refiner dashboard under Integrations > Segment.
Once you entered your Refiner API key and activated your new Destination, all new user data in Segment should also show up in your Refiner account.
Refiner implements the identify, group and track methods of Segment. We don’t process any “page view” events and will send a “not supported” alert back to Segment.
